WordPress Malware Removal Case Study

01The situation

A business owner contacted me after discovering their WordPress website had been compromised by malware. Visitors were seeing suspicious behaviour, malicious files had spread across the website, and customer trust was rapidly declining. Search visibility was also at risk because infected websites can trigger browser warnings, security alerts, and even Google blacklist issues.

The client had already attempted several cleanup methods before contacting me, but hidden malware and backdoors remained inside the website. They needed a complete WordPress malware removal rather than another temporary fix.

02How I approached it

  • Created a complete forensic backup before making any changes.
  • Performed a full WordPress malware removal across core files, plugins, themes, uploads, and the database.
  • Located hidden backdoors, malicious scripts, spam injections, and unauthorized administrator accounts.
  • Identified the original attack vector, including vulnerable plugins and weak authentication.
  • Removed every malicious file while preserving legitimate website content.
  • Replaced infected WordPress core files with clean verified versions.
  • Updated vulnerable plugins and themes to their latest secure versions.
  • Strengthened WordPress security through password resets, access hardening, and security best practices.
  • Verified the website with multiple malware scans to ensure a completely clean environment.
  • Prepared the website for search engine recrawling after the WordPress malware removal process was complete.

03The outcome

The recovery was completed successfully without data loss. Hidden backdoors were eliminated, malicious code was removed, and the vulnerable entry point was permanently closed to prevent reinfection.

The client regained a secure, fully functional WordPress website that customers could trust again. Beyond cleaning infected files, the project strengthened the website's overall security, improved stability, and significantly reduced the risk of future compromises.

To ensure long-term protection, I also implemented practical security improvements and provided recommendations for ongoing maintenance. This included keeping plugins and themes updated, strengthening administrator security, monitoring file integrity, maintaining reliable backups, and following WordPress security best practices. The goal wasn't simply to recover the website—it was to make sure it stayed secure long after the cleanup was complete.
